The Nymphomaniac is written in the style of Psycho-Mythology, a creative kind of union between fiction and psychological fact. In this literature an individual’s fantasy transcends the personal level, reaching the collective unconscious. Spiegelman had used Jung’s method of inner dialogue and Active Imagination for fourteen years, when one day there was a quantum jump for him, and as he put it: “The work was no longer merely for my own enlightenment and development, but suddenly took on the possibility of social usefulness.” Barbara Hannah (Active Imagination: Encounters with the Soul, 1981.):“(Jung) regarded it (Active Imagination)–right to the end of his life–as our greatest help and support in establishing and keeping a balance between conscious and unconscious. He often regretted that it was not more widely used by his pupils and even once said to me: ‘Active Imagination is the touchstone of whether anyone really wants to become independent through analysis or not.’ When I asked him whether I might quote this remark, he replied: ‘Not only may you, but I ask you to do so.’”Israel Regardie (1907-1985) the western world’s foremost authority on higher consciousness states:“Spiegelman deals symbolically with the process of individuation, the growth to be ONESELF, the movement Godward.”   We hope you enjoy the Small Gems Series of books by J. Marvin Spiegelman, Ph.D.
